IMF bailout beats populism in tax-heavy Rs18.9 trillion Budget 2024-25

Image
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb is presenting budget 2024-25 in the National Assembly on June 12, 2024. — APP Govts eonomic performance remained “impressive”: FinMin. FBR collection target set at Rs12,970 billion, says Aurangzeb. Budget proposes to hike minimum wage Rs 36,000. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, in his debut budget 2024-25 speech on the floor of the National Assembly, only confirmed that a long-term loan deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to bail out Pakistan’s economy outweighs the relief direly needed by the inflation-broken masses, whose incomes have hit rock-bottom in recent years. Torn between fears of losing popularity, ensuring economic stability, and riding out sticky slugflation, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led coalition government seems to be on its knees before the IMF to get the next bailout going. This year’s budget, much like the previous one, is generally viewed as being micro-tailored to meet the IMF requirements to ...

With Rafael Nadal absent and Iga Światek’s dominance under threat, the French Open is hard to call

Image
CNN  —  It felt like the beginning of the end of an era at the French Open when Rafael Nadal announced his absence from the tournament earlier this month. Having struggled with a hip injury since the Australian Open, Nadal – a 14-time champion at Roland-Garros – is missing the second grand slam of the year for the first time since his debut in 2005. He also announced that next year will be his last in professional tennis, which, when it comes, will be a defining moment in the history of the clay-court major – a competition Nadal has dominated for so long. For now, there is the more pressing matter of who will win this year’s French Open in Paris when it gets underway on Sunday and concludes on June 11. In the United States, the French Open is available to watch on NBC, streaming service Peacock, Tennis Channel, and Bally Sports. In European territories except France, the tournament is...

NBA rejects Warner Bros. Discovery media rights bid; TNT broadcasts to likely cease after next season

Image
The state of the NBA’s television rights has been a hot topic partly due to the popularity of the longtime running studio show “Inside the NBA,” which features Ernie Johnson and former NBA greats Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith. Despite being one of the league’s media partners for the past few decades, TNT’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has lost its broadcasting rights deal to competitors.  On Wednesday, the NBA rejected a bid for WBD to exercise its right to match an offer from Amazon for a part of the league’s 11-year, $76 billion media rights deal. The NBA released a statement saying WBD’s proposal fell short of the terms of the rival bid from Amazon. “Warner Bros. Discovery’s most recent proposal did not match the terms of Amazon Prime Video’s offer and, therefore, we have entered into a long-term arrangement with Amazon,” the league said. “Throughout these negotiations, our primary objective has been to maximize the reach and accessibility ...

Can budget FY25 unlock Pakistan’s investment potential?

Image
Can budget FY25 unlock Pakistan’s investment potential? Pakistan’s economy grew by less than 3 percent in the outgoing fiscal year 2023-24. This growth comes on the back of a somewhat decent performance in the agriculture sector where wheat and cotton crops performed relatively better this year. The industrial sector could not achieve its target and registered a mere 1 percent growth. A reason for reduced economic output has been the decline in investment-to-GDP ratio falling to a five-decade low of 13 percent.  This low investment milieu cripples the prospects for infrastructure development, social sector improvements, and job creation. Both local and foreign investment are carriers of ideas, knowledge, and skills from one region to the next and this process also stalls when investor interest is at its lowest.  Many have argued that the federal and provincial budgets, while presenting a crucial opportunity to reverse this trend has its limitations. Bold measures are ne...
